How
is HIV spread?
HIV
is most transmitted through the exchange of
blood and semen.
Most
people become infected through sexual activities.
The
number of cases of patients being infected by
health cares is now extremely low since medical
staff use protective gloves and other routine
safety precautions.
Also,
cases of patients getting infected through blood
transfusion or organ transplant is rare because
critical measures and tests are taken to ensure
that the blood is free of the virus.
The
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is spread
through:
- Anal,
vaginal, or oral sex without a condom. If
you have another sexually transmitted disease,
you chances of contracting HIV during sex
are much higher.
- Direct
blood or mucous membrane contact with an infected
person's blood.
- From
an infected mother to her child, during pregnancy,
birth, or breast feeding.
-
or rarely, through transfusions of HIV-infected
blood or its components, or other exchanges
of HIV-infected blood.
- Sharing
needles or equipment for drug use.
