Company Background

Streetwise Limited is a private Zambian company incorporated on 10th January 2000, under the Companies Act of 1994 (CAP.388) with the objective of producing and marketing street map booklets for all major Zambian towns along the line of rail, for use as travel guides. The booklets will help tourists, new arrivals, other visitors, entrepreneurs and the general public locate areas of interest and appropriate services with ease. The booklets will also be used as a medium for advertising goods and services for entrepreneurs.

The Project

With permission from the Surveyor General, Streetwise Limited has reproduced the street map of the city of Lusaka, in book form. The booklet is  called the Lusaka and Livingstone Street Map Travel Guide. The Travel Guide, the first of its kind in Zambia, will carry among others:

  1. A profile on Lusaka and Livingstone

  2. Tit-bits for the traveller;

  3. Street Map of Lusaka divided into 32 full colour maps each placed on B5 paper;

  4. Advertisements, and;

  5. An index to: advertisers; street names; suburb names; foreign missions; government and; municipalities.

Our choice of the two cities is based on the fact that Livingstone is a major tourist destination not only in southern Africa but also in the world. The coming of the Sun International and their vigorous advertising drive has put Livingstone on the world stage. Government programmes such as the World Bank supported SEED programme are also expected to raise standards in Livingstone, through rehabilitation of infrastructure. The private sector is also doing a lot to make Livingstone an attractive tourist destination. Tourist arrivals are therefore expected to grow and to continue to do so.

Lusaka being the major entry point for tourists, potential foreign investors and other visitors, and also being home to members of the diplomatic corps, technical assistance personnel and executive officers of foreign corporations, having a street map of the city will help. Being able to walk into a bookshop or tourist shop, lodge restaurant or hotel and pick up a copy of a street guide for Lusaka and Livingstone will promote tourism in the two cities. It will also help the population in the two cities to have useful travel information.

Benefits of having the  Street Map Travel Guide

  1. The travel guide will help the public undertake general travel around the city. Not having a travel guide for the city means that one has to ask his or her way around to get to the desired destination.

  2. The travel guide will also help tourists and other visitors to the city find their way around without any inconvenience. A street map is a “must have” for tourists wishing to undertake unguided tours of the city. It allows tourists take their time touring the various beautiful sites in the city leisurely and uninterrupted.

  3. New arrivals such as potential investors, members of the diplomatic corps and technical assistance personnel will also find the travel guide useful.

  4. Having a travel guide will help reduce crime in the city. The traveling public, visitors and tourists will not fall prey to criminal elements as they try to find their way around the city.

  5. Entrepreneurs will find the travel guide useful not only as an effective medium for advertising but also as an effective tool for devising an efficient and effective distribution network for the distribution of their goods and services.

Social/Community Benefits

The introduction of the Lusaka Street Map Travel Guide will also bring the following benefits to the residents of the city:

  1. Combating and preventing crime in the City: The travel guide will be a very essential tool for law enforcement organs such as the Police Service and security companies, as it will help them locate areas in distress with ease. Quick reference to the Travel Guide will give them the exact location and how best to get there;

  2. Support to the maintenance of selected social amenities in the city. In collaboration with the Lusaka City Council and other stakeholders, Streetwise Limited plans to support the maintenance of selected social amenities such as parks and community welfare centres;

  3. Streetwise limited plans to support the health and city authorities in the dissemination of social messages such as adverts on the dangers HIV/AIDS, crime prevention messages efforts, etc; This will be done through among other means, free advertising in the Lusaka Street Map Travel Guide;

Proposed distribution outlets for the Travel Guide

The travel guide will be distributed through strategic points such as the Zambia National Tourist Board, international airports, bookshops, filling stations, hotels, lodges and supermarkets.

The number of booklets published is 10,000 copies.

 The Lusaka – Livingstone Street Guide will be updated annually to incorporate new developments to the two cities.
